Indian Air Force Successfully Executes Operations on Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) Airstrip Near Addanki

Addanki, Bapatla District, March 18, 2024. Indian Air Force, Demonstrating operational preparedness and effective coordination between civil and military authorities, the Indian Air Force (IAF) conducted operations on an Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) airstrip located on National Highway 16 near Addanki in Bapatla district. During this significant event, Su-30 and Hawk fighters performed overshoots, while An-32 and Dornier transport aircraft landed and took off from the strip.

The activation showcased seamless collaboration among various agencies, including the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), district administration, state police, and the IAF, highlighting a high level of synergy in conducting diverse activities.

This activation marks the second instance of such operations, with the previous one conducted on December 29, 2022. The ELF airstrip, spanning 4.1 kilometers in length and 33 meters in width, has been meticulously constructed by the NHAI according to specifications provided by the IAF. While several ELF airstrips are operational nationwide, this particular facility in Andhra Pradesh has recently become operationalized in peninsular India.

ELF highway airstrips enhance the flexibility of air operations during contingencies and serve as invaluable assets during Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations, especially in remote areas. The IAF, in collaboration with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), is actively engaged in establishing ELF facilities at suitable locations across the country.

The successful activation of the ELF airstrip near Addanki underscores the commitment of the IAF and its partners to strengthening national security and augmenting response capabilities during critical times.
