Indian Coast Guard Ship Samudra Paheredar Demonstrates Pollution Control Capabilities in ASEAN Visit

The Indian Coast Guard ship Samudra Paheredar, known for its specialized Pollution Control capabilities, made its presence felt as it docked at Manila Bay, Philippines on March 25, 2024, for a three-day visit. This visit marks a significant stride in showcasing India’s commitment to combating marine pollution in the ASEAN region and fostering bilateral ties with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).

The Samudra Paheredar’s voyage is part of a broader initiative aimed at exhibiting the Indian Coast Guard’s Marine Pollution Response capabilities and addressing shared concerns regarding marine pollution in the ASEAN region. This visit underscores India’s resolve to collaborate with regional partners in safeguarding marine ecosystems.

During its overseas deployment to ASEAN countries, including the Philippines, Vietnam, and Brunei from March 25 to April 12, 2024, the ship is slated to engage in port calls at strategic locations. Equipped with specialized marine pollution control equipment and a Chetak Helicopter configured for Pollution Response, the Samudra Paheredar is geared up to handle and mitigate oil spills effectively.

The visit agenda includes Pollution Response training sessions and practical demonstrations of various equipment, fostering knowledge exchange and capacity building among maritime agencies. Notably, the ship has embarked 25 National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets as part of the “Puneet Sagar Abhiyan,” contributing to international outreach efforts and environmental conservation through beach cleanups and similar activities.

This visit holds paramount importance in strengthening bilateral relationships with key maritime agencies in the region, including the Philippine Coast Guard, Vietnam Coast Guard, and Brunei Maritime agencies. Through Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) and enhanced maritime cooperation initiatives, the Indian Coast Guard aims to bolster safety, security, and environmental stewardship in the ASEAN waters.

Commanded by Deputy Inspector General Sudhir Ravindran and stationed on the East Coast of India in Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, the Samudra Paheredar has a commendable track record in executing various Coast Guard operations, ranging from Pollution Response to Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR).

As the Indian Coast Guard Samudra Paheredar sets sail on its mission to promote environmental sustainability and maritime cooperation, it symbolizes India’s commitment to preserving our oceans and fostering camaraderie across borders. This endeavor exemplifies the spirit of global collaboration in safeguarding our precious marine resources for generations to come.
